Red Shoes

Hans Christian Anderson wrote a fairy tale called The Red Shoes. In the tale, the heroine Karen becomes obsessed with the beauty of her red shoes, and can think of nothing else. Not church or other people. One day an old soldier admires them and mentions they are pretty dancing shoes, and soon because of her pride in her shoes and her inability to think of anything else they become her curse. Finally she must have her feet chopped off because the shoes are stuck fast, but she repents her ways in the end.

Cyborg 009
From Chris: I found a refrence to the little red shoes in the episode called "Chrismas Eve Mirage". The only difference is that the girl was happy to be dancing.

Maitantei Loki Ragnarok
From Crystal Shapiro: There is an episode entitled Red Shoes. In the storyline one of the Norn sisters places a spell on the shoes to manipulate someone. The person wearing the shoes can't control themselves. Definitely reminds me of that poor girl who was forced to dance and dance. Luckily the shoes didn't have to be cut off with the feet here.

Princess Tutu
From Chris: Episode 9 starts with a telling of the Little Red Shoes.

Shoujo Kakumei Utena
From Beth: From episode 30, "The Barefoot Girl." The Shadow Play Girls' performance was their own rendition of the Red Shoes, with the first girl dancing around in her new red shoes, not wishing to stop wearing them, or dancing, even though the other girl warns she will keep dancing until it kills her. But, the first girl points out that she also has a pair of the red shoes, even if she isn't willing to put them on herself, she still owns them.

Vampire Princess Miyu
Whether the red shoes are an allusion or not to the Anderson tale I do not know. But they do inspire confidence in Miho and they are magical, at least to Miho. The shinma tells her, "You may be an ordinary girl, but you'll be under my spell while wearing these." While wearing them he says she'll be wearing magic shoes and will be able to sing better than anyone else. Miho believes this, and it is the confidence she needed.
