Atlantis
Atlantis was first mentioned by Plato. Debate continues on whether Atlantis was a real place mentioned, or if it was made-up
by Plato in order to serve as an example for the point he wanted to make in the dialogue he used it in. Plato says of Atlantis that
those who lived there possessed great knowledge, including of prophecy and medicine. Atlantis was said to be the heart of a great
empire, and was great in virtue and military power. But the civilization ended when great earthquakes and floods destroyed Atlantis
within a day and night, and it disappeared beneath the sea.
Atlantis in Vision of Escaflowne was once found on Earth (the Mystic Moon), and it's descendants are called Draconians. On Earth their power became great and
the people fit to be gods; they created a device to turn human thought to energy. They became omnipotent and omniscent, sprouting wings.
But their arrogance destroyed them, yet before their civilization was fully destroyed they used their will to create Gaea.
Some of Plato's dialogue shows up in the Escaflowne version of Atlantis. In both cases, the people are the most advanced civilization and
rise above all others. The idea of prophecy is closely connected in the Escaflowne world with the theme of fate and divination. Hitomi possesses
the pendant left to her by her grandmother which came from Gaea and Atlantis. Hitomi's power of prophecy is enhanced by the stone. Also,
both civilizations were destroyed in the end.
In the movie E.Y.E.S. of Mars, Atlantis is the name of the civilization that results from Eve and other humans' spiritual migration from the colony of Mars to Earth, and thus the beginning of
humans of today. Before the people migrated to Mars though they had lived on a planet called Atlas. Atlas was the king of Atlantis in myth. Atlas is also one of those who participated in the
revolt of the titans and for this Zeus punished him by making him forever bear the weight of the world on his shoulders.
In volume 2 of the Bride of Deimos manga Atlantis is a lost civilization beneath the desert that Deimos stumbles upon after a fortune-teller points him in that traveling direction.
The legend he remembers of the city is that it flourished under the rulership of a queen, but disappeared after a great earthquake and only survives in human memory. The dress of
the first woman he meets there, Tina, is similar to ancient Egypt as is her hairstyle. The Queen is a bit like a black widow (and this may be partly what her personality is based on).
She marries and then sucks the life of her bridegrooms so that she has lived for over 1,000 years. She's actually a fire ant incarnate and uses her subjects and travelers as live hosts
for her larvae. And all the androginous looking soldiers in Atlantis are her children.
